VIENNA, Va. ( August 4, 2022) – The Department of the Navy has selected the Navy Federal branch aboard Naval Base San Diego as its “Credit Union of the Year” for 2021. This marks the 16th consecutive time that the Department of the Navy has recognized a Navy Federal branch for its service to a base community.

“Our team is passionate about our mission of member service”, said Eliana Tate, Naval Base San Diego Branch Manager. “Serving aboard Naval Base San Diego is an honor, and we cherish the opportunity to help our members achieve their financial goals.”

Captain Ted Carlson, Commanding Officer of Naval Base San Diego, submitted the award. In the nomination package, Captain Carlson touted on the branch’s “extraordinary service” to the more than 200 tenant commands, military families and civilian personnel aboard the naval base.

Some of the resources provided by the Naval Base San Diego Branch include:

  • Counseling services for young military families. Teaching them proper credit management, managing debt, and budgeting.
  • Combating predatory lending by combining forces with the Military Financial Resilience Alliance Coalition.
  • Providing outreach to military and family support groups, recruit programs and base events.
  • Using Sailor Recognition by sponsoring and recognizing the outstanding efforts of select Sailors within the command. By offering certificates of recognition and goodie bags.

In 2021, a financial services non-profit closed all California base locations. The Navy Federal branch stepped up aboard Naval Base San Diego though, providing support and preventing sailors from experiencing any interruptions in assistance.

“It’s an honor to earn a prestigious award for the past 16 years,” said Keith Hoskins, Executive Vice President for Branch Operations at Navy Federal. “This shows the incredible level of commitment to our mission and shows a job well done by those providing member service at the Naval Base San Diego Branch.”
